The Systems These Tools Model
A bottleneck is a mismatch, not a defect. Every system is limited by one component at any moment. If your GPU finishes each frame while the CPU is still preparing the next, you are CPU-bound and a graphics upgrade buys you almost nothing. The bottleneck calculator compares relative component capability so you spend money on the part that is actually constraining you — and the answer changes with resolution, since higher resolutions shift load onto the GPU and can make a "CPU bottleneck" disappear.
Pokémon type effectiveness is multiplication, and dual types are where intuition breaks. Each attacking type has a multiplier against each defending type — 2× for super effective, 0.5× for not very effective, 0× for immune. Against a dual-type Pokémon, the two multipliers multiply together, which produces the 4× and 0.25× outcomes that decide competitive matches. It also produces genuinely counter-intuitive results: a type that is strong against both halves compounds to 4×, while one strong against one half and weak against the other lands back at neutral 1×. The type calculator works the full grid rather than making you memorise it.
Pokémon GO evolution CP scales, it does not reset. CP after evolution is derived from the pre-evolution's underlying stats and IVs rather than being rolled fresh, which is why a high-CP starting Pokémon evolves into a high-CP result. Knowing the projected CP before spending candy is the entire point.
Palworld breeding is a deterministic table. The child of two Pals is not random — each Pal has a hidden breeding power value, and the pairing resolves to a specific offspring via the game's table. That means a target Pal has a findable parent combination, which is exactly what the breeding calculator searches for.
Elden Ring builds are soft caps and level maths. Stat investment has diminishing returns past soft-cap thresholds, and every point spent is a level that raises invasion matchmaking range. Planning a build means deciding where to stop — the build calculator projects final level and damage so you can find the stopping point before committing dozens of hours.
Nether portal linking is a coordinate ratio. Minecraft's Nether compresses the Overworld eight to one: one block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld. Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to place the linked portal — Y stays as-is. Get it wrong and the game links your portal to an existing one somewhere unhelpful, which is the single most common cause of a portal network collapsing into chaos.
Vorici socket colouring is expected-cost optimisation. Path of Exile's off-colour sockets are probabilistic, and the Vorici method exists because brute-force chromatic spam has a far worse expected cost than the right crafting recipe. The calculator compares expected costs across approaches rather than gambling.
Point buy is a budget with a non-linear price list. D&D's 27-point system charges progressively more for higher ability scores — the cost per point rises as you approach the cap, which is precisely what discourages dumping everything into one stat. The point-buy calculator enforces the budget so your character is legal at the table.
